Informed Consent Policy

Dr. Sim Lew-Gor
Melbourne, Victoria & Wagga Wagga, New South Wales
Effective
January 2026
Applies to
All consultations, treatments and surgical procedures
Governed by
Australian Consumer Law & AHPRA Guidelines
Overview

All medical and aesthetic treatments provided by Dr Sim Lew-Gor are performed following a process of informed consent.

Informed consent is a structured discussion between doctor and patient, ensuring that each individual:

  • understands the nature of the proposed treatment
  • is aware of potential risks and limitations
  • has the opportunity to ask questions
  • is able to make a voluntary and informed decision

This policy outlines the principles of informed consent as applied within our practice.

Consultation Requirement

A comprehensive consultation is required prior to any treatment.

During consultation, Dr Sim Lew-Gor will assess:

  • medical history
  • facial anatomy and structure
  • skin quality and ageing pattern
  • patient goals and expectations

Based on this assessment, a personalised treatment plan will be discussed.

Understanding Treatment Options

Patients will be provided with information regarding:

  • available treatment options
  • the rationale for any recommended treatment
  • alternative approaches, including no treatment

Where appropriate, this may include discussion of both non-surgical and surgical options.

Risks and Complications

All procedures, including non-surgical treatments, carry potential risks.

These may include:

  • common and expected side effects
  • less common complications
  • rare but more serious risks

The nature and likelihood of risks vary depending on the procedure and individual factors.

Patients are encouraged to ensure they understand:

  • potential benefits
  • limitations of treatment
  • possible complications

before proceeding.

No Guarantee of Outcomes

While all treatments are performed with clinical care and expertise:

  • outcomes cannot be guaranteed
  • results vary between individuals

Factors influencing outcomes include:

  • anatomy
  • healing response
  • lifestyle
  • adherence to aftercare

Aesthetic treatments aim for improvement and refinement, not perfection.

Staged and Individualised Treatment

In many cases, treatment is performed in stages.

This allows for:

  • more precise and controlled outcomes
  • assessment of response before further treatment
  • reduced risk of over-treatment

Patients will be advised if a staged approach is recommended.

Cooling-Off and Time for Consideration

Patients are encouraged to take sufficient time to:

  • consider their treatment options
  • reflect on the information provided
  • ask further questions if needed

Elective aesthetic procedures should not be undertaken under pressure or urgency.

Patient Responsibility

Patients play an important role in the informed consent process.

Patients are expected to:

  • provide accurate and complete medical history
  • disclose relevant medications and conditions
  • follow pre- and post-treatment instructions
  • communicate any concerns or unexpected outcomes
Right to Decline or Defer Treatment

Dr Sim Lew-Gor may recommend:

  • delaying treatment
  • modifying the treatment plan
  • or not proceeding with treatment

if it is not considered clinically appropriate or in the patient’s best interest.

Documentation of Consent

Formal informed consent will be obtained prior to treatment.

This may include:

  • written consent forms
  • verbal discussion
  • documentation in clinical records
Ongoing Consent

Consent is an ongoing process.

Patients may:

  • ask questions at any time
  • withdraw consent prior to treatment
  • request clarification or review
